The Day Clair Huxtable Adopted Me and Other Adventures
If I owned a tweed pencil skirt with matching jacket, long leather gloves, a pillbox hat and a Kelly bag, today would have been the day to wear it (instead I’m in the L.T. uniform - my usual jeans, boots, t-shirt and blazer). Why? Because I just got back to the office from the iconic Waldorf-Astoria hotel. Oh la la! The hotel is very fancy and classic – the type of place that doesn’t usually allow riff-raff like myself – so I felt pretty lucky that I got to go. The hotel played host to the press junket for Tyler Perry’s latest film, For Colored Girls, and not only was there a hospitality suite with a delightful spread of snacks (a girl has got to eat!) but I also got to meet some of the stars of the film. I saw Director Tyler Perry who said he was sad he hadn’t seen me since the Why Did I Get Married Too? junket (eh, not really), Anika Noni Rose who plays Yasmine and Phylicia Rashad who plays Gilda. More importantly, Phylicia is now being considered for the supporting role in the yet-too-be-titled L.T. biopic. Casting hasn’t officially begun for the story of my life (I figure I have a couple more years to do something somewhat noteworthy) but I can tell you now without a doubt that she would be the perfect actress to play the Mother/Best Friend/Caregiver/Voice of Reason because the woman just oozes classiness. Unfortunately there aren’t many instances in my life where a “voice of reason” comes into play, so the screenplay might need to be altered slightly.
But enough about my new girl crush on Phylicia, let’s get back to the junket. I’m an old pro at these things now and pretty much have the routine down (hurry up… wait… hurry up… wait) but for some reason today’s junket was better than any of the others I’ve been too. I’m not sure if it was because everyone was well rested from the weekend and on top of our game or if it was because we were all aware that we were in a nice place and should be on our best behavior. Usually I would be running up and down the hotel hallways like Eloise hopped up on sugary treats from afternoon tea, shoving food from the hospitality suite into my Ziploc-lined pockets, but instead I sat there like a proper lady and tried not to get in anyone’s way. As soon as Derek finishes editing the segments and throws them up on the site I’ll let you all know so you can see how smooth the whole thing was. Kind of like “L.T.” and “exercise,” the words “smooth” and “junket” don’t usually go together – so these clips will definitely be worth a peek. In the meantime, here are some pictures. Let me know if you can feel my positive aura hovering off camera.
