BOO!
Did I scare you? No? Ok, well maybe this will: Yesterday I challenged Dustin, our six-foot, six-inch tall tech guru, to a pizza-eating contest… and I won. Well, technically it was a tie but in that case I feel the title goes to the challenger. As @resrvordog pointed out, eating contests are won by width, not height, but pound for pound I was the underdog by far. I guess I didn’t learn my lesson from the water-chugging incident – which is the terrifying part. Why do we do these things to ourselves? It’s like sitting through a scary movie; we voluntarily pay good money to have the beejeebees scared out of us. The only logical (and highly technical) explanation I can come up with is that there is some sort of chemical reaction in the brain that activates when you’re scared, which is followed by endorphins that make you happy. Kind of like the exact opposite of what happens when you enter an eating competition. You’re super happy to be eating and then miserable that you put yourself through it.
But enough about my binge eating – let’s talk about the main event of the weekend - make that the month - Halloween! The way I see it there are three major bonuses to Halloween. First, candy; Second, spooky decorations; Second and a half, carving pumpkins; and lastly (and most importantly) the costume. Listening to what my friends and co-workers are dressing up as got me thinking about Halloween and it’s innate tie to movies. I mean, how many Holly Golightly, Freddy Krueger, Indiana Jones and Mavericks do you see every year? Of course there are the trendy characters as well (my guess is that Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Snooki will dominate the 2010 Halloween circuit) but the classics never fade away. What did people dress up as before the movies? Was everyone either a witch or a ghost? Everyone in the same get-up – talk about a fashion faux pas!
So my question for you all is two-fold; what are you going to dress up as and which characters from films released this year do you think will be the most popular? I saw a lot of Mad Hatter and Iron Man costumes at Comic-Con so I think we’ll be seeing some more of those. Buzz Lightyear will most definitely be knocking at my door and I’m thinking there might be a few Jacobs, Edwards and Bellas running around as well. Maybe a Kick-Ass or an Expendable? Leave a comment below with your spooky predictions.
