See Ya Next Year!
Second only to May 24th (that’s the day after my birthday) today is the saddest day of the year. Why, you ask? Because we couldn’t possibly be any further away from Halloween. As the faint tune of “Monster Mash” fades into the background and all of the fake cobwebs have been thrown in the trash, I’ve realized that we’ll have to wait a full 364 days to celebrate the one day a year where it is acceptable to take candy from strangers and sadly it will be an entire year before we can dress up in costume again. Or, if you live in New York City like I do, you can just continue to dress up like a total weirdo and no one will even give you a second look. Last night, as I walked my dachshund (AKA my Halloweenie) around the neighborhood, I played a little game with myself called “Is It a Costume?” The game is pretty straightforward; basically you just look at someone and ask yourself if they are naturally that freaky or if they are in costume… Fun, right? They only problem with the game is that you’ll never know if your assessments are accurate or not because, much like asking a woman if she is pregnant, you can’t really strut up to someone and ask if their electric blue hair is for a costume or if they’re that unique all the time (this coming from the girl who used to have fuchsia streaks in her hair).
Anyway, despite welcoming in November this morning I can’t seem to shake the spooky Halloween spirit. In fact, eerie ghosts and goblins inspired by office poll question of the day: If I were a zombie, would you shoot me? Sadly most of my co-workers said they would shoot me right away, even if I were a “friendly zombie” or “a zombie with a job who was a contributing member of society.” Can you believe that?! If I saw any of these hobos walking around with other un-dead I would capture them and try to rehabilitate them, or at least keep them caged until an anti-venom was created. What can I say; I guess I’m just a better person than most…
I don’t know about you, but I’m weaning myself off of Halloween in two ways. First, by fantasizing about life as a zombie and second, by squeezing a few more scary movies in before I make the switch to traditional fall fare. Shutter Island, Paranormal Activity, Saw VI andVampire in Brooklyn (just for kicks) are on my must-see list before I consider this holiday officially over.
Now that the costume party pictures have been posted on Facebook, what was the coolest get-up you saw? Did you collect any fun treats from your neighbors? Or, even better, any tricks? Leave a comment below letting me know how you celebrated the big day. Totally over Halloween and ready for Thanksgiving? Stay tuned for my next blog…
