Congratulations are in order for Robert De Niro who will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award for Lifetime Achievement at this year’s Golden Globes.  You go, Bobby.  Personally I was a little surprised to not be receiving the honor myself, but then my mother assured me it is only because I’m still too young… But, if Justin Bieber can have an autobiography at 16 years old then why can’t I have a lifetime achievement award at 25?  Sometimes life is so unfair!
Anyway, I’m pretty excited for De Niro since obviously he is an extremely accomplished actor and deserves the recognition.  Although it kind of makes me wonder where he is going to go from here.  I mean, if he gets a Lifetime Achievement Award at 67 then what the heck is he supposed to do for the rest of his life?  The man has at least a decade of great films left in him – is he just going to make Meet the Parents sequels until those little Fockers have little Fockers of their own?
Regardless of what De Niro’s next projects include, it’s pretty bonkers to me that he is now officially (at least according to the Golden Globes and, let’s face it, they’re one step below God) an icon.  His cute little mug is instantly recognizable for the many roles he’s played and he has a vast fan base that includes people from varying backgrounds.  In fact, just last night I saw his likeness posted all over the walls of an art gallery in Chelsea - right next to Twiggy, Christian Bale and Jack Nicholson.  People were literally swarming around the pieces that featured his classic Taxi Driver character Travis Bickle because once you’ve seen one of his films you have a lifetime connection to it.  Do you think that’s where the award comes from?  Can an artist’s accomplishments be measured by how many films they star in or how much their films gross at the box office?  Or is it based on who leaves the longest lasting impression?
Leave a comment below and let me know who you think should snag up next year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  I’m a classy gal and refuse to nominate myself, so my vote goes to Benjamin Button because if being able to age backwards isn’t an accomplishment then I don’t know what is.
