You Ungrateful Little….
It seems to me that the true significance of Thanksgiving, much like Valentine’s Day, has gotten lost in translation. Valentine’s Day was originally a religious holiday, then it became a day to celebrate the person you love by giving them stale chocolates and cheesy greeting cards, and, if you were with EPIX last Valentine’s Day, you know we made it all about blood and guts - AKA the color red and hearts! Now Valentine’s Day is about feeling sorry for yourself and binge eating until the loneliness goes away. Maybe throw in a couple glasses of wine and some diary entries Bridget-Jones-style for good measure.
Similarly, Thanksgiving is now all about the food. No one cares what you’re thankful for this year as long as the first two things you mention are turkey and stuffing. Peace between the pilgrims and Native Americans, big whoop. Health, happiness, friends and family – they’re all small potatoes compared to their mashed counterparts. Right??
So, I thought it would be fun to have a blog about all of the ungrateful characters that have been so kind as to grace our screens; I’m talking about the big turkeys (please note the cute Thanksgiving tie-in) that we all love to hate. For example, it took Sean Penn’s character in Dead Man Walking a while to be grateful for the kindness and compassion of Sister Helen Prejean. Umm, rude! Jim Carroll (Leonardo DiCaprio’s character) in The Basketball Diaries throws his natural talent away for a life of drug use. But obviously the choice between being the next Jordan and heroin is a tough one so we can’t fault him. Brothers is about a frazzled and deeply depressed Natalie Portman who loses all hope after she’s told her husband has died. In a moment of weakness she smooches his brother - an act that her husband who – Surprise! – is still alive, was not too thankful for. And finally, there is one heartbreaking moment in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button where Cate Blanchett is a typical ungrateful 20-something who has an attitude when Brad Pitt comes all the way from New Orleans – flowers in hand - to see her perform in the ballet. Thank goodness she gets her stuff together before he ages backwards into pedophile territory.
What are you thankful for this year? Besides LT Features, of course! If you haven’t already noticed, I’m thankful for Mark Wahlberg and whoever took the photo above.
L.T.
