Ferris Bueller, You’re My Hero
Ferris, a cultural icon who much like Cher and Madonna requires no last name, will always be my personal hero for a bevy of reasons. He is inspirational to me on many levels, but mainly because he made being a good guy equivalent to being a cool guy, which is pretty rare nowadays. He also instilled the epic motto “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it” – and ‘aint that the ultimate truth?
Movies have an intrinsic ability to inspire and guide us – I mean, of all the real-life heroes to choose from, I pick a fictional character that did nothing more than make pretty amazing use of his day. But luckily for those of us who don’t live in Hollywood, some celebrities bring their heroic characteristics home from the set with them. Just this past weekend, Chris Rock reminded us that he is a comedic icon by making a woman laugh at his local New Jersey mall. Yeah, it doesn’t sound like a big deal when I put it that way, but you should also know that the woman had gone into labor! Chris kept her giggling and distracted at the foot of the escalators where her water broke until medical help arrived.
And Ferris and Chris aren’t the only heroes out there! Sean Penn swooped into action when a building collapsed in Haiti and injured a woman and child. Sean rescued them from the rubble and drove them to a hospital. Then there is my boyfriend Brad Pitt who not only did more for New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina than most government officials, but he also fished a young fan out of the water in Venice after they tripped while trying to get his autograph. Man, if I had know it was that easy to get Brad’s attention I would have been treading Italian water for days. Will.i.am took action by picking up the tab when he heard two families tell Oprah that their homes were in foreclosure. Thanks to The Black Eyed Peas front man, they were able to keep their homes.
Tom Cruise is apparently applying for sainthood (or whatever the Scientologist equivalent to a Saint is) and has had multiple heroic moments – he helped a paparazzo who had fallen down, tied a woman’s car to his Hummer and pulled her out of the snow bank she was stuck in, and he and Katie Holmes waited for help with another couple after they had been in a car accident. Indiana Jones has nothing on Harrison Ford who rescued a dehydrated hiker with his helicopter, then helped a young Boy Scout who had been separated from his troupe, and finally flew supplies and volunteers to Haiti. Man… to think I felt proud of myself after giving my cab away to a tourist in the rain. Way to show me up, Hollywood.
