Basic Black
This past Thursday I went to go hear the hilarious comedian Lewis Black speak about his new upcoming special Lewis Black: Stark Raving Black (but since you’re following me on Twitter you already knew that, right?). I’ve seen his rambling act on TV before, but I had never seen him in person – and now I know I have really been missing out. He also seemed like such a nice guy which was a great little surprise. Sure, he is pretty vocal about his political perspectives, but he does it with a smile and smirk. He’s a cuddly comedian disguised as a Socialist – which, frankly, is a genius cover. I’m a superstar’s girlfriend who jets away on romantic and exotic vacations every weekend, but Monday to Friday I’m disguised as an average blogger. Oh shoot, I just blew my cover.
Anyway, Lewypoo really is a clever and charismatic guy – I’m looking forward to his special airing on EPIX. That’s right, no ticket necessary! You’ll be able to see it all right here. Can’t wait? There are clips and tidbits already available. Fine… you want to see the whole thing right this second? Well lucky for you, I happen to have an AUTOGRAPHED DVD that I’m going to give to one of my devoted readers. I’m going to put my thinking cap on and come up with the perfect question – I’ll post it in a bit and then the best answer will be getting a very special treat in the mail.
Ok, enough about my new found crush on Lewie. Here are some of the highlights of the night: He explains where his “pissed off optimism” comes from (his parents – particularly his mom who was “scary funny” - were a big source of inspiration) and his sense of humor is infectious. I mean, why dryly express your political prowess when you can scream it? One audience member asked if Lewis had any advice for aspiring comics, and he said they should kill themselves. I know that sounds a little nutty, but he rationalized it well by adding that entertainers tend to gain popularity post mortem. It makes sense in a Lewis-Black-sort-of-way. Another person asked where he saw himself in ten years and he said “doing the same old sh*t but from a gurney.” So, we have a lot more performances to look forward to!
