Happy belated 4th of July everyone! I hope you celebrated by watching fireworks, gorging on hot dogs and sporting red, white and blue out the wazoo. Oh look at that, I made a little rhyme.
I paid homage to America in my own way and escaped the heat by hunkering down with some movies. I finally watched Brothers, which depicts the terrible effects of war on a family – before, during and after being deployed. Since it was a big downer, I flipped on Top Gun for my daily dose of Cruise. Stop-Loss is another great movie about nationalism and fighting for your country, but would be a total sob-fest if it weren’t for the adorable mugs on Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Since I’m on the subject, here’s an interesting story about patriotism. About a week before I was supposed to graduate college I decided that joining the armed forces would be a genius way to avoid having to enter the “real world.” I flirted with the idea and even took down the number of my local recruiter’s office but never actually intended to sign up. Well, one morning after a late night of New Orleans fun, I woke up to find that I had placed a call to those recruiters… A few days later I got an Army sweatshirt in the mail and a packet about “next steps.” It doesn’t exactly make me a Draft Dodger, but it’s a silly story nonetheless. Ahh, how different my life would be – writing official orders instead of blogs, rocking combat boots instead of heels, going to boot camp for free rather than paying for it at Equinox. Kudos to those of you who are brave enough to actually follow through; forget Iron Man and G.I. Joe– you’re the real heroes.
I would, however, enlist in a heartbeat if it meant I got to drive around a tank like Lori Petty and Naomi Watts in Tank Girl. But then again, who wouldn’t?
